As the world was preparing to usher in 2018, senior executives of Apple, the world's largest firm by market capitalization, were busy trying to contain a public relations crisis sparked by media reports that the company had slowed down older iPhones in a surreptitious manner.

The iPhone slowdown controversy actually began gaining momentum with a Reddit post which proved that an older iPhone would get faster if the battery was replaced.

Apple said users of the iPhone 6 and its successors will be able to replace batteries for 34,000 won (US$31.80), down from the previous 100,000 won. However, Apple Korea received criticism for not following suit with an apology or compensation.

Apple had a troublesome end to 2017 as it admitted slowing down older iPhones to maintain optimum performance.

Markets end year with 28 pc gains
At 2:36 PM, the BSE Sensex was trading at 34,038, up 190 points, while the Nifty50 Index was ruling at 10,523, up 45 points. The BSE mid-cap and small-cap indices ended higher by 0.74 per cent and 0.64 per cent, respectively.

Apple said it used software updates to improve power management and "avoid unexpected shutdowns on iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s Plus, and iPhone SE". BGR said Apple failed to provide its customers with full information about how it was handling the performance of aging batteries, and took users' support for granted.

In a statement, Apple said, "We expected to need more time to be ready, but we are happy to offer our customers the lower pricing right away". By not recognizing the battery-related performance problems earlier, Apple also basically acknowledged that it doesn't test new releases of iOS on iPhones with older batteries.

Following its apology and assurance of more transparency, Apple will no doubt put the whole controversy behind it and continue to win more sales. This would bring the price down from $79 to $29, which will roll out worldwide all throughout 2018. The Bangalore consumer centre too was inefficient. Very unprofessional behavior. It is like a virus attack on the device.
