Opposition pushes to send Triple Talaq to select committee

The opposition parties are said to be planning for either amendment against criminalising triple talaq or referring the Bill to a select committee for detailed consideration.

"These days a number of reforms are being brought in".

Last week amid the hue and cry of lawmakers, This Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha with most of the leading parties in the Opposition, together with the Congress, voting in favor, but with the admonition.

Union law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had told the lower house that the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill seeks to "ensure the larger constitutional goals of gender justice and gender equality of married Muslim women, and help sub-serve their fundamental rights of non-discrimination and empowerment".

The Karnataka government has rejected the triple talaq bill passed by the Lok Sabha.

The bill makes grant of instant talaq a cognisable and a non-bailable offence.

The passed bill will now be tabled in the Rajya Sabha for passage before it is forwarded to the President for signing it into law.

However, owing to the lack of a majority of the government in the Rajya Sabha, there are chances that the Bill may be impeded or blocked. The amendments to the bill moved by the opposition were also rejected. "But the BJP-led NDA government is bypassing the committee system", Raja said. "When it comes to Rajya Sabha, we will demand that it should be sent to the Select Committee", he said.

It gives power to the victim to approach a magistrate seeking "subsistence allowance" for herself and minor children in the case of instant triple talaq or talaq-e-biddat.
