Modi breaks protocol as Netanyahu begins India trip

"With Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu visiting India, we look forward to more hugs from PM Modi", a tweet said from the official handle of Congress with a video taking a jibe at PM Modi and his various hugs and handshakes.

In a sign of respect for the Israeli leader, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally welcomed Netanyahu on the tarmac at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi.

Swaraj told Netanyahu that India was very excited to receive him and emphasised on the "warm and special" friendship between the two countries.

Netanyahu tweeted: "I am so happy to meet you again, my friend @PMOIndia @NarendraModi!"

The two leaders then went to the Teen Murti Chowk in central Delhi, which was formally renamed Teen Murti-Haifa Chowk.

"This gesture underscores the special link and the common history between Israel and India", Netanyahu said on Sunday.

The capture of Haifa cleared a route for the Allies to send supplies to the city via sea. During his stay, Netanyahu will also visit Gujarat and Mumbai.

Netanyahu's visit to India is only the second one by an Israeli prime minister and comes after a gap of 15 years. The Israeli embassy had said that Netanyahu will meet with Jewish community leaders and select members of the Indian business community in Mumbai.

It had said he will reach out to Bollywood in an exclusive "Shalom Bollywood" event.

Netanyahu will accompany 11-year-old Moshe Holtzberg as the boy returns for the first time to the house where his parents were killed in the attacks that left 166 people dead.
