Trump administration resumes accepting DACA renewals

The brief tweet was posted just after Trump slammed Democrats for being "all talk" and "no action" on The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

The president on Friday said he used "tough" language during the meeting to refer to immigrants from impoverished, violence-plagued countries but denies using the crude slur attributed to him.

Perdue had previously issued a joint statement with Sen.

Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton and Georgia Sen.

One of Trump's top advisers, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, said on "Fox News Sunday" she did not recall if Trump used "that specific phrase".

"I think he is a racist", Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., said on "This Week".

"He will always reject temporary, weak and risky stopgap measures that threaten the lives of hardworking Americans, and undercut immigrants who seek a better life in the United States through a legal pathway".

It has distracted from the policy discussion of not only DACA, but of broader issues like immigration based on merit, which the president says he favors over a policy of family reunification, what he calls "chain immigration".

A bipartisan group of senators struck a deal Wednesday that couples shielding DREAMers from deportation with a litany of conservative immigration reforms and border security funding, albeit a greatly reduced amount from the administration's initial requests. "Wall was not properly funded, Chain (migration) & (Diversity Visa) Lottery were made worse and United States of America would be forced to take large numbers of people from high crime countries which are doing badly", he wrote Friday on Twitter. He also wants immigration based more on merit, with rules tightened that allow USA citizens and residents to bring in relatives overseas.

In a second tweet a few minutes later, he wrote: "I, as President, want people coming into our Country who are going to help us become strong and great again, people coming in through a system based on MERIT". There are 51 Senate Republicans in a chamber in which 60 votes are needed to pass major legislation, and GOP leaders are also facing problems in the House, where some Republican members have balked at the prospect of passing another stopgap that does not increase military funding. "We are getting to work as soon as possible Monday morning". The party is now using the program as a political bargaining chip in Congress's debate over the federal budget, demanding that any deal to keep the government funded must include protections for DACA recipients, also known as DREAMers. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services said late Saturday that it would resume accepting renewal requests from people who had already enrolled in the program. On Sunday, the situation's urgency had not changed.
