Medals awarded in women's Alpine combined

Lindsey Vonn failed to finish her final Olympic race as Switzerland's Michelle Gisin took gold in the women's alpine combined.

"It's a nice way to end the Olympics", Shiffrin said of her second medal.

No one near the top of the leader board after the first downhill run is ranked in the top 15 of the World slalom standings.

Shiffrin jumped from sixth to first with her combined time of 2 minutes, 21.87 seconds (40.52 in slalom) but Michelle Gisin of Switzerland quickly bested her time with a combined time of 2:20.90.

Norway's Ragnhild Mowinckel just missed out on a third medal of these Games as she came fourth, 0.29secs behind Holdener.

For Holdener it was a second medal of these Games following a silver in slalom. She will be 37 years old at the next Winter Olympics.

"Coming out here today, I did everything that I needed to do to have a shot for a medal, and it's really cool to have that work out", she said.

"I took one warmup run going to the slalom inspection in Lenzerheide", Vonn said, alluding to her fourth-place finish at the World Cup stop in Switzerland in the combined last month. And I really had hoped that he would be alive to see me [at this year's Olympics].

Indonesia raises aviation warnings
Mount Sinabung then erupted in 2014 killing 16 people, and the 2016 explosion killed seven. Kualanamu International Airport in Medan is about 75 kilometres from Sinabung.

"I didn't feel I could make that slalom".

"To come away from these Olympics with two medals is insane".

After her truncated run in the slalom portion of the combined, Vonn told reporters that she's intent on breaking Ingemar Stenmark's record of World Cup wins.

Kristoffersen, who with Hirscher have pretty much monopolized the slalom for the last couple of years, charged out of the start on the second run but made an error after only a handful of gates and skied out.

Shiffrin chose to skip yesterday's downhill race to prepare for today's combined event. For Lindsey Vonn, the goal is a controlled run that will keep her there. She arrived in South Korea to chatter about entering five, but after a series of weather-related schedule changes, wound up dropping two.

A three-time world champion in the slalom, Shiffrin is also the reigning World Cup overall and slalom champion and a four-time victor of the World Cup discipline title in that event. Numerous top racers such as Hirscher, Vonn and Shiffrin are planning to skip the race - and another chance at a medal - to prepare for the resumption of the World Cup schedule. She'd grown so much in them in these past four years, and there's no telling what the next Olympic cycle might hold. "Moving forward, I know what to do to get better". "I'm going to give it hell and maybe I can pull out a miracle".

"It's incredible what she's able to accomplish", Vonn said. "I think she had the potential to do a lot more at these Games, but at the same time you can't expect everything all the time".
