The promotion of Shahbaz Sharif comes after the Supreme Court previous year toppled his elder brother Nawaz following corruption allegations, then last week banned him from leading his eponymous Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party.

Mr Khan said that it was possible that CM Sharif would continue as the party's president if the general council elected him to the post next month. After taking over as lifetime leader of the party, Nawaz proposed Shahbaz's name for acting president of the party.

In another tweet, Maryam Nawaz informed as to how PML-N Chairman Raja Zafarul Haq, PM Abbasi and Shehbaz Sharif's proposal to name Nawaz "Quaid for life" elicited a resounding approval.

The Central Working Committee of the PML-N met in Lahore to elect Shehbaz Sharif as party's acting president. Then the party's general council is required to elect a president within 45 days.

He was first elected as the PML-N president during exile in 2002, due to the registration of cases against Nawaz.

"PMLN elects Nawaz Sharif as its QUAID for life. Under the current circumstances, the PML-N can not remain enrolled with the ECP", the petition read further.

"At the moment, there is no candidate for the slot of interim president of PML-N other than Shahbaz Sharif". "I will try my best to come up to the expectations of my party after assuming this responsibility", he said. Sharif criticized his disqualification by terming it a conspiracy against him.

Nawaz has already nominated Shahbaz for the prime minister candidate if PML-N wins this year's general elections.

Keeping this technical issue in mind, the PML-N's information secretary said that only those CWC members who were elected before the July 28 decision had been called for Tuesday's meeting.

Sharif was disqualified from the position of the Prime Minister after the Supreme Court found him guilty and dishonest in the Panama Papers controversy for not disclosing his employment with FZE Capital.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar declares that any person disqualified under Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution is barred from holding the position of head of a political party.
