Armenia Scraps Zurich Protocols; President Sargsyan Points to Turkish Intransigence

At a meeting today in Yerevan of Armenia's National Security Council, President Serzh Sargsyan noted the lack of progress exhibited by Turkey on the matter of normalizing diplomatic relations between the two countries. The president was previously selected through a direct popular vote by the public.

Dalia GrybauskaitÄ— wished Armen Sarkissian continued success, patience and wisdom in performing the important and responsible duties of the presidential position. This, of course, is a very important event in the life of our people and the state, and, of course, is a very important milestone on the way to the establishment of parliamentary democracy.

"Dear Mr. Sarkissian, I sincerely congratulate you on your election as Armenia's President".

The candidacy of the 64-year-old former prime minister and former ambassador to the United Kingdom was backed by 90 lawmakers at ten against and one abstention in the 105-seat legislative assembly.

The outgoing president is widely expected to become prime minister later in April. But all of those officials will have to be nominated by the prime minister first.

From 1976 to 1984 he was a professor of Physics at Yerevan State University and subsequently Head of the Department of Computer Modelling of Complex Systems at the University's Department of Theoretical Physics.

So far, parliaments in more than 20 countries, including Germany, have voted in laws or resolutions explicitly recognising the Armenian "genocide". Previously, he had been Armenia's ambassador in London.

Opposition leaders accuse Sarksyan of planning to move into the post of prime minister to continue ruling Armenia. He served as prime minister in 1996-1997.
