26 of marriage party die in road accident in Gujarat

A truck fell into a pit from a bridge near Randhora Bridge in Gujarat's Bhavnagar district killing 26 people including 10 women and five children on Tuesday. "Preliminary reports suggest the driver had lost control of the vehicle", Gujarat deputy chief minister Nitin Patel said, adding that the state government would extend every help possible.

The bus was reportedly carrying about 60 people, many of whom were woman and children, on their way to a wedding in Botad district.

"The truck fell on a concrete base under the bridge on the Bhavnagar-Rajkot highway". According to preliminary reports, the truck was carrying about 60 people.

The accident happened in Bhavnagar district, about 200 kilometers from the state capital Ahmedabad.

The injured were immediately rushed to a local hospital.

Those killed included the groom's parents, besides two dozen others heading to the wedding party.

Prime Minister Modi said the accident was "extremely unfortunate and anguishing". The police are at the accident spot, supervising the rescue operations.

Authorities have announced financial aid of 400,000 rupees ($6,148) to the family of each of the deceased.

"Compensation of Rs. 4 lakh for next of kin of those who died in the accident and full medical treatment will be given to the injured".
