"Sydney airport security screening isn't working this morning, so every passenger for the next 2 hours' worth of domestic flights is now crushed into the check in area waiting for the gates to open", tweeted one.

Passengers at Sydney Airport are facing delays after "technical" issues affected security checkpoints at both global and domestic terminals.

It comes as Sydney Airport was thrown into turmoil this morning when a technical issue caused major delays to flights from terminals 1 and 2, with the airport even going as far as telling passengers to avoid the airport altogether.

"There may be some delays as a result, however guests are advised to arrive at the airport as planned for their upcoming Virgin Australia flight", it posted on Twitter.

'Virgin Australia is working to minimise any disruption to passengers caused by the earlier issues and to reaccommodate any affected passengers.

"We're working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible and thank you for your patience".

A spokesperson for Sydney Airport told ARN that the technical problems arose from "an underlying technology issue that we were addressing".

It affected systems including the airport's CCTV, meaning passengers could not be screened for about two hours.

Inbound flights and Qantas flights from T3 remain unaffected.
