'American Idol': Judge new judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie

This is American...wig? If you tuned in to American Idol's return on ABC to see Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan in action, you met 18-year-old Noah Davis and probably learned a new meaning for "wig".

Season two finalist and CT resident Kimberley Locke gives us a whole recap.

The first round of auditions were set in New York City and Los Angeles and we saw a lot of golden tickets be handed out right out of the gate.

American Idol airs Sunday's and Monday's on ABC in the US.

I have no idea what's happening but Nico Bones, who admits he's hungover is ready to audition with "Worms". Sunday night we got a first glimpse at the competition, and a chance to see how two singer/songwriters from the DE valley did when given their big shot at singing for the judges. "When we're not compassionate, we get emotional". We'll be back tomorrow night with more auditions. He was accompanied by his fiancee Christie, who has stood by him through it all, in the audition room.

A quick trip back to NY, and it's a "yes" for 16-year-old Zach Denofrio, who has a high-pitched speaking voice but turns into a Frank Sinatra-type crooner when he sings. He took control of the piano with "Stay" by Rhianna. While the zombie apocalypse drama last week eked out its worst numbers in seven years-you'd have to go all the way back to the fifth episode (Nov. 28, 2010) in order to find an installment of "Walking Dead" that averaged a lower demo delivery than last Sunday's 2.9-AMC's flagship series still beats out everything else on the tube in the target audience. But I'd give it D. But the judges loved him. Michelle's boots weren't just made for walkin' but dancin' too. Of course, not everyone got in, including Cosby, a music theater performer who did not get that coveted ticket to Hollywood.

"You're not a pop star", Katy confessed, before Lionel noted Koby's voice simply won't work for records. That's when Katy Perry beckoned him forward and surprised him with a kiss. I like this kid. I'm just very excited. The panel applauded his ability to make such music from such a bare but beloved instrument, and his golden ticket capped an unexpectedly moving first night. Later, 26-year-old Dennis Lorenzo (who sang Allen Stone's "Unaware") explained after his father's murder, he made some poor life decisions as a teenager - until his grandparents gave him a guitar.
