The incident unfolded on Tuesday morning, when a student walked into Great Mills High School and shot a female student in the hallway, according to St. Mary's County Sheriff Tim Cameron.

But if Gaskill's shot stopped him, the deputy would be only the second resource officer to gun down an active school shooter since the Columbine High School massacre in 1999, according to a year-long Washington Post analysis of dozens of school shootings.

Cameron said authorities were still investigating whether the shooter was killed by the officer. It's unclear if his round hit the shooter.

Rollins was confronted by the school resource officer, they exchanged gunfire, and Rollins was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. The girl was in intensive care with life-threatening critical injuries, while the boy was in good condition, the sheriff said.

The deputy was not injured.

Cameron said investigators would determine whether the shooter died of a wound from the school resource officer's gun or in some other way.

Since then, a movement led by students from the Florida high school has pushed for increased gun-control measures.

House Speaker Michael Busch, a Democrat, said legislators have "every intention" of passing legislation to make schools safer. "I'm sure that weighs on his mind".

The Twitter feed of NRA-TV, an arm of the National Rifle Association, hailed Gaskill as proof that the group's assertion that armed guards-or teachers-is a better response to school shootings than gun control of any kind.

Male contraceptive pill passes first safety test
In a survey, men have answered that they would prefer a contraceptive pill instead of gels and injectable substances. It's 99 per cent effective when taken perfectly, Planned Parenthood wrote, but added that it's hard to do this.

Blaine Gaskill, the school resource officer and a former SWAT team member, responded within a minute, firing one round.

Hogan said "it's outrageous that we haven't taken action yet", with less than three weeks left in the session.

"I understand there may be constitutional right to have a gun", Hoyer recalled him saying; "but I have a constitutional right to live".

Two students, a 16-year-old female and 14-year-old male, were critically injured.

According to CNN's research, there have been 16 confirmed school shootings this year in the United States prior to today. Local law enforcement have since said the shooter has died. Police said they obtained search warrants and found a cache of semi-automatic rifles, handguns and other weapons.

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan said in a statement that although his prayers are with the victims, "prayers are not enough".

The Sheriff of St. Mary's County Tim Cameron said, "When the SRO fired, the suspect as described to me fired nearly simultaneously". He said schools in the county don't now have metal detectors, and pointed out there is a cost involved to add the equipment and the staff necessary to put them in place.

Emma Gonzalez, a Stoneman Douglas student, tweeted her support Tuesday for her peers at Great Mills. "This is what we prepare for", Cameron said at the end of an initial press briefing Tuesday morning.

So far, this year, there have already been 17 school shootings where someone was hurt or killed.
