Last Syrian Rebel Group Starts Leaving Ghouta

The deal brokered by regime ally Russian Federation would see fighters with the Jaish al-Islam rebel faction leave Ghouta's main town of Douma for opposition-held territory in northern Syria, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Government forces extended their control over those areas over the course of a five-week offensive that killed at least 1,600 civilians and displaced tens of thousands more, according to the Observatory, an opposition-linked group that monitors both sides of the conflict.

"The town of Douma has come closer to joining other villages and areas of [eastern] Ghouta taken back by the army", it said.

Twenty four buses left Douma Sunday evening via a humanitarian corridor in Muhayam Wafedeen toward south western province of Idlib. The channel said troops entered the towns and raised the national flag in Arbeen's main square.

"Turkey will not hesitate to use initiative if terrorists in Manbij are not driven away", a statement on President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's presidential website last week read, warning the U.S. whose special forces there in the northern Syrian town continue to work with Kurdish-led groups.

"Arbeen, Zamalka, Jobar and Ein Tarma in eastern Ghouta are free of terrorists", shouted a correspondent for state-affiliated al-Ikhbariya TV channel from Arbeen.

A Hezbollah run-media unit said on Sunday an agreement had been reached after several days of negotiations to spare bloodshed in Douma. More than 100,000 others headed to government-controlled areas over the past weeks. The government says it is restoring security to Damascus, which was regularly shelled from eastern Ghouta during the war.

The government lost control of Douma, the largest urban center in the eastern suburbs of Damascus in insurgent hands, in the early phase of Syria's civil war, now in its eighth year.

"Twelve buses carrying 629 Jaish al Islam terrorists and their families exited Douma.in preparation of them being transported to Jarablus", regime news agency SANA reported, using the regime's term for all rebel fighters.

There was no immediate comment from the opposition group.

More than 40,000 Syrian rebels and their family members have relocated to rebel-held parts of northern Syria, according to the Russian military.
