Local government officials are responding tonight, after President Trump addressed the nation, stating that the USA has launched precision strikes on targets associated with the Syrian chemical weapons program.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley told the Security Council that the military strikes were "justified, legitimate, and proportionate".

President Donald Trump has expressed his intention to pull all United States forces out of Syria in the near future.

She said: "We can not stand by and let Russian Federation trash every worldwide norm and allow use of chemical weapons to go unanswered".

Defense Secretary James Mattis gave a briefing on the actions in Syria and said the Syrian regime has continued to ignore worldwide law and use chemical weapons in attacks murdering woman and children and other innocent civilians. In 2017, the US launched missiles against Syria following reports of a sarin gas attack.

Russian Federation had also proposed a draft resolution condemning the US-initiated strikes of Syria which was only supported by China and Bolivia.

UNICEF noted that most of the schools affected had not reopened because of extensive damage or ongoing insecurity in the region. At the beginning, the group didn't know what to do with the girls, at least, not in the first one month of their captivity.

"And what's most important is no one contests that the use of chemical weapons can not be tolerated and must be deterred", he said. Both facilities are located near Homs, north of Damascus.

The United Nations Security Council on Saturday rejected a Russian resolution to condemn Western strikes on Syria.

"This operation does not represent a change in United States policy, nor an attempt to depose the Syrian regime".

The first target included the Syrian Scientific Studies and Research Centre at al-Mazzah Airport in Damascus; the second, an alleged chemical weapons storage facility west of Homs; and the third, an alleged chemical weapons equipment storage site and command post, also near Homs. She blamed the Security Council and Russia's actions for failing in its duty to hold those who use chemical weapons to account. She said that Washington's main goal is "to see American troops come home", but it is not going to leave "until we know we have accomplished those things".

"Last night, the United States along with our British and French allies showed the world that the United States will not sit idly by while the Syrian regime uses chemical weapons to murder and maim its own people".

French President Emmanuel Macron said in a statement that a target of the strike was the Syrian government's "clandestine chemical arsenal". He authorized a barrage of Tomahawk cruise missiles to hit a single Syrian airfield in April 2017 in retaliation for Assad's use of sarin gas against civilians.
