The three sites included the Barzah chemical-weapons research and development center near Damascus that was hit by 76 missiles and "destroyed".

Defense Secretary Mattis told reporters at the Pentagon late Friday that the strike, with French and British forces, was a "heavy" one-time strike in retaliation for Assad's chlorine gas attack on April 7 that killed as many as 70 people and injured 1,000 others. The US said the overnight missile attacks have crippled Bashar al-Assad's chemical weaponry. "Thank you to France and the United Kingdom for their wisdom and the power of their fine Military", Trump tweeted early Saturday.

There was "information" that showed that both sarin and chlorine were used in the most recent chemical weapons attack in Syria, prompting the U.S. strikes, the official said.

"The overwhelming why this was the right thing to do, and that is to deter the use of chemical weapons - not just by the Assad regime - but around the world", Mr Johnson said.

Recent unjustified US strikes against installations in Syria and backed by French and British forces, would fuel extremism in the region and delay any political solution, according to Tunisian observers.

On Saturday, the UN Security Council overwhelmingly rejected a Russian resolution calling for condemnation of "aggression" by the three allies.

While United States President Donald Trump triumphantly declared "Mission Accomplished!" on Saturday following a US-led missile assault on Syrian chemical weapons facilities, the Pentagon admitted that the assault does not totally eliminate the possibility that Syria's Bashar al-Assad could launch future chemical attacks. The Syrian government and its ally Russian Federation have denied involvement in any such attack.

The government's capture of Douma, the last town held by the rebels in eastern Ghouta, marked a major victory for Assad. She added: "It's some of the worst piece of fake news we've yet seen from the Russian Federation propaganda machine".

"If the Syrian regime uses this poison gas again, the United States is locked and loaded", Haley said.

In a UN Security Council session Saturday, American UN Ambassador Nikki Haley warned that the U.S. was "locked and loaded" to take aim at Syria again if Assad uses chemical weapons again.

Diplomats said negotiations on the draft resolution would begin on Monday and it was not immediately clear when the United States, France and Britain wanted to put it to a vote.

"We'll see how smart he is", Haley said.

Mr Assad said that he believed that the airstrikes would unify the country, according to Dmitry Sablin who was one of his visitors. "We've spent a week talking about the unique horror of chemical weapons". The US, UK and France claimed success in striking chemical weapons facilities in the country.

Assad told a group of visiting Russian lawmakers that the Western missile strikes were an act of aggression, Russian news agencies reported.

Assad didn't comment on calls by the US State Department to declare alleged Syrian stockpiles of chemical weapons during the meeting.
