The injured teenager, who was a student at a different Florida high school, was shot in the ankle and rushed to the hospital, CNN reports.

The Friday morning shooting of a 17-year-old Forest High School student by a 19-year-old non-student was "intentional", authorities said.

Police say "active shooter protocols" saved students' lives as a gunman opened fire at a Florida high school, injuring one student in the ankle, in what is now the 20th school shooting in the USA this year.

The suspect, 19-year-old Sky Bouche, was quickly taken into custody by the school resource officer, Marion County Sheriff's Deputy James Long, officials said.

"It's a shame what society has come to in that we even have to be here on a school campus", Woods said. "My emotions are running rampant".

Prepared for such alerts, students and teachers leapt into action to barricade the classroom's one door and block the door's window.

"Once inside school grounds, Bouche entered a bathroom and put on a tactical vest and gloves to prepare himself for the shooting...he shot one round from his sawed-off shotgun through a classroom door", the office said.

SWAT did a sweep of the school after the shooting.

"Then we have an incident like this", he said, "I'm angry, I'm sad and I want to do something".

"I didn't hear anything other than people from other classrooms crying and scared", he said. The Sheriff's Office has the weapon, a Marion County Sheriff's spokesperson said.

Citizens are asked to avoid the area.

"The fact that it happened on this day, in a way, reinforces what we are trying to get across", said Ryan Servaites, a high school freshman in Parkland, Florida, where 17 students and teachers were gunned down in February.

On Thursday, Forest High School shared information about the walkout, which was scheduled to start at 10:20 a.m., inviting any student to participate in the "student-led civic demonstration" if they chose to. Students were bused to First Baptist Church on Maricamp Road for parent pickup.

School walkouts were canceled districtwide in Marion County after the shooting, according to school board member Nancy Stacy.

The shooting comes just two months after a gunman killed 17 people and wounded 17 others at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

The shooting happened as students around the country walked out of class to protest gun violence on the anniversary of the massacre at Colorado's Columbine High School.
