Manchester United advance to FA Cup Final

Alexis Sanchez confounded his critics with a superb all round attacking display during Manchester United's 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup semi-final.

While Mourinho has fallen short in the English Premier League behind newly crowned champion Manchester City, United is second and on course for its highest finish since Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. "I think we need a bit more from Old Trafford and looking to the next season, it's not possible to do it without a better Old Trafford", Mourinho said.

One of the reasons United have been so criticised this season despite siting above largely celebrated Liverpool and Tottenham sides in the Premier League table - much to Mourinho's chagrin - is that when they are second best for any period of time, they generally look utterly bad.

"Not only are we playing for second, but we're playing for final places so we have a lot to drive us forward". They are happy now, we are not happy. "We have to try and pick ourselves up and finish the season strongly".

To lose one FA Cup semi-final can be unfortunate - to lose eight in succession shows a pattern is emerging.

"We want to win trophies, we have the staff that want to win".

"If we split the match into periods we were the best team for many of these periods", Mourinho said.

"We stayed away from home, in London. We have got to improve".

The loss also continued an odd trend for Mauricio Pochettino's men in knockout competitions. The most important [thing] is that we are in this process, that after four years we can compete and that is fantastic.

However, Spurs started like the side determined to make a statement.

Spurs opened the scoring after just 11 minutes when Dele Alli slid the ball home from Christian Eriksen's cross.

"We were dominant from the first minute and it only looked to be going one way".

Eriksen played in an inch ideal cross for Dele Alli to tap it into the back of the net. To say he lost his duel with Mousa Dembele that day would be an understatement, and it was on the back of that performance that he temporarily lost his place as a first-choice midfielder for Mourinho.

"I tell Alexis the same (thing) I told Paul a couple of weeks ago", added Mourinho. It was unfair to go in 1-1 at half-time.

"That is the basics".

United assumed control of proceedings and were duly rewarded when Ander Herrera - who was excellent in all facets - neatly struck his shot from Romelu Lukaku's mis-controlled pass through the legs of Ben Davies and past stand-in keeper Michel Vorm.
