On Saturday, the Drug Enforcement Administration will host the 15th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. During that time, you may dispose of any unused or unwanted medications.

"Most people don't realize this, but there are more people that have issues with pharmaceuticals and overdoses than there are of cocaine, heroine and ecstasy combined", Sullivan said.

More than 900,000 pounds of prescription drugs were collected nationwide previous year during the event and more than 9 million pounds have been collected since 2010, according to the DEA. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse.

Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from a home medicine cabinet. "Rates of prescription drug abuse in the USA are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs".

Martella's Pharmacy in Windber, Boswell Prescription Center in Boswell and Penn Laurel Pharmacy in Central City will accept unwanted prescription drugs from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m. It's important to get rid of unused prescriptions to prevent them from falling into the wrong hands.

Officials also point out that opioid abuse is at epidemic levels in the US and a top public health concern.

The nonmedical use of controlled substance medications is at an all-time high.

The prescription drug drop box is designed for year-round disposal and will be installed in the Weatherford College Police Department.
