An abandoned building engulfed in flames in downtown Sao Paulo collapsed Tuesday as firefighters worked to put out the fire that began in the wee hours of the morning.

The 26-storey building, a former headquarters of the federal police, caught the fire around 1:30 a.m. local time.

The blaze is now under control, the spokesman added.

Footage of the building collapsing has been shared online, showing huge flames and billowing black smoke.

A massive fire ripped through a building in Sao Paulo yesterday, killing at least one person.

The cause of the fire is now unknown, according to the spokesman, who added that he does not know the total number of floors in the building due to the partial collapse. Media reports differ on the actual number of residents of the building, the number of which could have been up to 100 people, others say up to 50 families were registered to live.

The governor said it was legally hard to force people to evacuate the old and decaying buildings.

An adjacent building also caught fire, but was evacuated and no one was injured. "We don't know how many people were in the building so we don't know whether we'll find more victims in the ruins". She admitted knowing that the building offered serious safety risks but said her family had nowhere else to go, "I was afraid but I could not live anywhere else". "People live there in desperation".

Sao Paulo state Governor Marcio Franca said "it was a tragedy waiting to happen...." "The state is acting as if us, the occupiers, us, from the movements, are responsible for this".

Brazilian President Michel Temer visited the ruins early Tuesday morning, but rushed away after victims began throwing rocks and debris at his auto.

"At first I thought it was a fight but then I heard people shouting 'get out, get out!'" he said.
