WFSB-TV reporter Matthew Campbell wrote on Twitter that the suspect is still inside the home and that the fire is coming from another structure within the property.

Her medical condition was not immediately known, nor was the fate of her husband, who may have been inside the barn when it exploded, the newspaper reported early Thursday.

The man had been containing his wife in the house in a "threatening fashion", according to Freda. Multiple officers on scene were injured.

State police are investigating the case, including the source and cause of the powerful explosion and large fire.

A CT hospital says it's treating seven people who were injured when a barn exploded behind a house where police were negotiating with a man who had taken his wife hostage.

Freda said that the officers suffered cuts, abrasions, and bruises, and were treated at Yale New Haven hospital.

The explosion occurred in a house on Quinnipiac Avenue. "They went into a back barn, which was a barn in back of the actual house and then a series of explosions took place".

Freda said that the Montowese section of North Haven is a peaceful area, and that Wednesday night's events were simply an "aberration". He said the police "were trying to coax him ... out of the house and really try to calm the situation down".

The explosion occurred after a woman ran into a police station with a complaint that her three days were held hostage in the house on Quinnipiac Avenue, and she managed to escape.

Residents near the home reported on the police department's Facebook page that they heard the explosion and felt their own homes shake around 8:30 p.m.

State police is assisting with the investigation.

Police were heard continuing to try to coax the man out of the house even after the explosion. There will be no access to side streets in the area and residents are asked to avoid the area all day.

After the explosion, firefighters were still working more than an hour later to get the flames under control.
