IN police officer, homicide suspect die following exchange of gunfire

The dying was the primary within the line of responsibility by an officer with the Terre Haute Police Division since July 11, 2011.

Pitts' was removed from the hospital this afternoon at 1:00 and a procession proceeded to DeBaun Funeral Home. We are inundated with kind/loving messages and for that we are thankful. Authorities did not reveal when the homicide under investigation occurred.

Terre Haute Police Chief John Plasse said the suspect was wounded in a shootout with officers from the city and other agencies, then barricaded himself inside the building.

Police say the suspect was also shot during that exchange of gunfire and also died.

Terre Haute police spokesman Officer Ryan Adamson says the city police officer was shot and fatally wounded Friday evening while investigating a homicide at an apartment complex on the west side of the city that's about 70 miles west of Indianapolis. Authorities say the suspect's name in known to police, but they have not released it.

State police will be handling the investigation into the officer's death, Watts said in a tweet around 8:30 p.m. "It's bone chilling, it's heart wrenching, it's just the worst call that you can possible hear so, we're going to do what we can to support THPD like we always do and we thank you for your support".

A vigil is planned Saturday night at the Vigo County Courthouse.

The officer, though rushed away from the site, succumbed to his wounds at Terre Haute Regional Hospital.

"The citizens of Terre Haute don't need to worry", says Sheriff Ewing.
