At least 36 feared drowned as they are still missing after a boat capsized in Godavari river in East Godavari district last evening.

East Godavari District Collector Kartikeya Misra said that the passengers asked the boat driver and the owner of the boat, who was also onboard, to take it ashore when it started raining. Efforts were still on to trace the other 10, they said.

Describing the deaths as nothing but government killings, Pawan said it was unfortunate that the government was least bothered about lack of permissions and checking fitness of the boats to operate in the river. Officials informed him that the boat was also carrying cement bags and two-wheelers. That caused the mishap. We will ensure that the children in the affected families are enrolled in residential schools and their education is taken care of, " Naidu said.

Officials said since the boat capsized at a remote area and information on what exactly happened was not received. The incident occurred around 4:30 pm in East Godavari districts.

The teams from the navy, state disaster management department and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel were engaged in the rescue operations with the help of Navy helicopters.

Mr Reddy alleged: "It is the government's indifference that has led to three mishaps in past six months as the boats are allowed to ferry passengers illegally and everyone from the top leadership to the cadres are involved in taking bribes". The rescue teams had to cut up a part of the boat to bring out the bodies. They could initially retrieve only two bodies, who were identified as villagers of Kondamodalu.

Crazier stuff has happened, though, and adding another blue-chip prospect to either one of these teams seems nearly unfair. If two lottery teams are tied, they split the ping pong balls evenly, with any left over awarded to team winning the flip.
