Trump tweeted Tuesday that he had a "great team" working on the summit, confirming that top North Korean official Kim Yong Chol was headed to NY for talks with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

He arrived in Beijing on Tuesday as there's no direct flight between North Korea and the US amid speculation that he might have met with Chinese officials.

Despite the same surname, he has no relation to the North Korean leader Kim.

A Reuters witness saw Kim Yong Chol at Beijing International Airport, but did not observe him board a flight.

Trump did not commingle the China trade issues with the North Korea diplomatic efforts in his tweets, but the president has openly related the two issues, some US-China experts note.

"Solid response to my letter, thank you!" tweeted Trump. Kim Jong UN agrees with me.

Trump announced in a tweet Tuesday that a senior North Korean official, Kim Young Chol, was on his way to NY for meetings with United States officials.

In the Oval Office Saturday, Trump said the preparations were underway, and going well.

"They plan to have additional meetings this week", Sanders said.

While likely substantive, those border discussions could be upstaged by any talks between Kim Yong Chol and officials in the United States, said Evans Revere, a former senior diplomat who dealt with North Korea under US President George W. Bush.

"During the South Korea-U.S. summit, President Trump said the willing to clearly put an end to hostile relations (between the U.S. and North Korea) and help (the North) achieve economic prosperity if North Korea conducts denuclearization", he said.

Both sides have been eager to hold the meeting after tensions flared previous year over North Korea's nuclear weapons and ballistic missile tests.

In a Monday phone call, Trump and Abe affirmed that they would meet ahead of the planned summit and discussed their shared goal of "complete and permanent dismantlement of North Korea's nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons and ballistic missile programs", the White House said in a statement.
