Initiative to Break California Into 3 States to Go on November Ballot

The Cal 3 initiative gathered and submitted to the California Secretary of State office more than double the required signatures needed to qualify for the ballot, representing citizens who supported the opportunity to declare their desire for a new direction.

A new California would also begin in Los Angeles County and cover coastal areas. He first embarked on an unsuccessful quest to divide California into six smaller states in 2014 and hasn't given up on the idea. Were voters to approve his ballot measure, the effort would need the blessing of both houses of the California Legislature - lawmakers who, in a sense, would be asked to abandon their posts.

California residents will get a chance to vote on a measure to divide the Golden State into three separate states, election officials said Tuesday. While California's differences run deep, they may only be heightened in closer quarters.

This graphic shows the three-way split Silicon Valley entrepreneur Timothy Draper is proposing for the state of California. For a variety of reasons, that seemed to be way too many new states for most people. Each would have roughly 13 million people. Even if it wins passage from voters, the measure would face significant hurdles.

His group, headed by former Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez, has been hammering at the proposal for months, accusing Mr. Draper of dragging the state into an expensive mud-fight for a measure that has no prospects for success.

- Southern California would comprise 12 counties, including Fresno, Kern, Orange and San Diego counties.

Will there soon be three Californias?

Woman Caught Driving In Tennessee With Kids In Pet Kennels
A U.S. woman has been arrested after a video emerged of her travelling with her two young children in pet kennels in Memphis . The kids told police that there was no air in the back of the vehicle, later moving them into the backseat.

A breakup would be complex, as the state's businesses and universities - even its water system - are interconnected and dependent on one another.

"I am 100 percent certain we'll oppose it", said Eric Bauman, chair of the California Democratic Party.

Peggy Grande, a spokeswoman for the "Cal 3" campaign, on Wednesday said she doesn't know "exactly what the dollar figure will look like".

Northern California would include Alameda, Alpine, Amador, Butte, Calaveras, Colusa, Contra Costa, Del Norte, El Dorado, Glenn, Humboldt, Lake, Lassen, Marin, Mariposa, Mendocino, Merced, Modoc, Napa, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Siskiyou, Shasta, Tehama, Trinity, Tuolumne, Sacramento, San Joaquin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Sierra, Solano, Sonoma, Stanislaus, Sutter, Yolo and Yuba counties.

The last time an existing state split up, it was the 1860s and a civil war broke out.

Last year, an effort dubbed Calexit sought to bring the question of whether California should secede from the USA to this year's ballot. "Splitting California into three new states will triple the amount of special interests, lobbyists, politicians and bureaucracy". The secession movement fell off after its leader announced he was moving to Russian Federation.
