Late last month, Mr Trump proceeded to infuriate U.S. allies - from the European Union to Canada and Mexico by imposing tariffs of 25 per cent on imported steel and 10 per cent on aluminium.

It was the first time he had threatened to impose a specific level of tariffs on automobiles from Europe.

The products affected will include cigarettes, denim, peanut butter, orange juice, blue jeans, bourbon, and motorcycles.

Germany's top automakers favor ending all import tariffs for cars between the European Union and the US, the Wall Street Journal reported June 20.

The EU also has in reserve potential tariffs of 10% to 50% that it could impose on a further 3.6 billion euros (RM16.6 billion) of U.S. imports in three years' time.

Trump has repeatedly singled out German auto imports to the United States for criticism. "We make great cars in the United States", Cohn explained.

It is hard for the White House to unilaterally impose tariffs without input from Congress, but Trump has found several ways to do it this year. Senators this week grilled Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross. It is a $241 million measure that matches the amount of steel and aluminum import duty expected to be collected from India by the United States after the Trump administration imposed the measures earlier this year. A group representing major US and foreign automakers has said it was "confident that vehicle imports do not pose a national security risk".

In addition to the European Union, both Mexico and Canada have responded with their own tariff threats. In fact, it goes against all logic and history.

"I think he's going about it in a way where he says 'Look I want to grow the economy".

Cecilia Malmstrom, the EU's trade commissioner, acknowledged that the European Union had targeted some iconic American imports for tariffs, like Harley-Davidson motorcycles and bourbon, to "make noise" and put pressure on USA leaders.

And he is threatening to impose another national security-based tariff on imports of cars, trucks and auto parts.

"What's more, these products will have a strong symbolic political impact". Harley-Davidson is from Wisconsin, the home state of Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan. "China puts tariffs on US$50 billion of U.S. goods after Trump kicked off trade war", June 15).

The total amount of U.S. goods exported to China amounted to only US$130 billion (S$177 billion) past year, meaning that Mr Trump's potential tariffs on US$250 billion or more of Chinese imports can not be matched, at least directly.

As he sought to reach a denuclearization agreement with North Korea's Kim Jong-Un, Trump has likewise minced no words in chastising his European counterparts. Trump wrote in a tweet.
