Argentina midfielder Javier Mascherano has announced his retirement from worldwide football following the country's elimination from the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russian Federation.

Edinson Cavani was optimistic over a calf injury after scoring twice against Portugal to send Uruguay into the World Cup quarter-finals.

However Ronaldo, who will be 37 by the time of the next World Cup, would not be drawn on whether he planned to extend his global career.

If Barcelona forward Messi, who previously quit the Argentina team in 2016 before changing his mind, does not continue until the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, he will end his career without a major trophy for his country.

At one point led by a young Lionel Messi, the Argentines won five titles at the U-20 World Cup from 1995-2007 and two gold medals at the Olympics in 2004 and 2008.

Maradona is in Russian Federation to watch the World Cup and has been a lively presence at Argentina matches, celebrating his country's dramatic win over Nigeria and resulting progression to the last 16 with an offensive gesture.

It's hard to predict opponents like Nigeria says Sampaoli
Argentina must beat Nigeria and hope Iceland fail to beat Croatia in order to reach the knockout stage of the completion. But then we want to be prepared for on the pitch conditions, which is very important.

Although the 50-year-old had some kind words for Ronaldo recently, he also explained that he will always see Messi as the superior player. "Hopefully they can achieve something".

"This is a World Cup and of course we're all defending and we're all working for our national teams, and that's the essential aspect". When the final whistle blew, the score was 2-1 in favor of Uruguay. He was 18 when he scored his first World Cup goal, but he was soon joined by others who made their mark at the youth level.

The 57-year-old drew the attention of TV cameras by dancing, celebrating and gesturing to the crowd as Argentina confirmed their place in the World Cup knockout phase.

Messi did ride to their rescue with a superb opening goal to help squeeze past Nigeria 2-1 to set up the meeting with France. There are high hopes for him as a possible future replacement for Messi.

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has refused to discuss his retirement plans after the World Cup exit.

If Messi decides to call it quits, that is.
