England beat Colombia 4-3 on penalties after an ill-tempered 1-1 draw in Moscow to set up a World Cup quarter-final with Sweden.

The Round 16 concludes with one of the most intriguing matchups of the tournament thus far, as Colombia and England-two potential final candidates-meet in Moscow on Tuesday.

Head coach Gareth Southgate has called the last-16 clash against Colombia England's "biggest knockout game for a decade" with the winners set to face Sweden or Switzerland in the next round.

But as the game entered the third minute of stoppage time, Yerry Mina headed in an equalizer.

The penalty which led to England's breakthrough was awarded in the 52nd minute as midfielder Carlos Sanchez, who had been lucky to escape punishment for previous incidents, wrestled Kane to the ground.

It is that understanding on the field that will count above and beyond anything else at Spartak Stadium against a talented Colombia side who are waiting on the fitness of star playmaker James Rodriguez.

The importance of the match is clearly not lost on long-suffering English fans. It was their first ever World Cup win via penalty shootout.

Davinson Sanchez has played day-in, day-out against all of the players likely to be in the England starting eleven.

Colombia and England last met competitively at the 1998 World Cup with a David Beckham-inspired Three Lions prevailing on a 2-0 scoreline against what was considered to the end of an era for a golden generation of Colombian players.

England captain Harry Kane is all smiles after converting his second half penalty against Colombia at the 2018 Fifa World Cup. They have some good players, but I don't think they will be able to cope with England's high-pressing game.

Electioneering has given way to football frenzy across the South American country, with Colombia facing England in the last 16 of the World Cup tomorrow.
