Canada imposes retaliatory tariffs on $12.5B of US goods

The response from Canada is created to be proportional, with the new taxes being based on the amount of steel and aluminum shipped a year ago from Canada to the United States.

As the country celebrates Canada Day, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is on the road highlighting the stand he has taken against the USA government's decision to impose tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum products.

The broadcast of the interview with Trump coincided with Canada's imposition of tariffs on select United States goods in retaliation for Washington's levies on Canadian steel and aluminum. Canada also imposed tariffs on American whiskey and motor boats from the United States. The list of more than 250 USA goods subject to Canadian duties - including Florida juice, Wisconsin toilet paper and North Carolina gherkins, which are labor intensive to produce - aim to pressure Trump supporters key states in November's U.S. midterm elections.

The new tariffs place a 25 percent tax on more than 40 USA steel products and a tax of 10 percent on more than 80 other items such as toffee, maple syrup, coffee beans and strawberry jam.
