Although pinpointed as a weak link for Liverpool this season, the former Southampton and Lyon man helped the Reds to the Champions League final, where they were beaten by Real Madrid, but another shot at glory presents itself on Sunday in the World Cup final.

The 29-year-old has been criticised for his performances for Liverpool this season but has played a key role in Croatia's success in Russian Federation this summer.

"Without being arrogant, I think I have proved to be one of the best defenders in the world".

Last October, Lovren was taken off by Liverpool Manager Jurgen Klopp just half an hour into a game against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley, when Kane scored twice in a 4-1 win for his side.

He continued: 'This is something we will never forget. "We showed our character, we showed that we deserved to be in the final and people should respect us", he said.

The Liverpool centre back also said his country was now thirsty for "revenge" over France in Sunday's showpiece as they seek to banish the memory of their semi-final defeat to same nation 20 years ago. We've had this weight on our shoulders all the time, and now people will never forget us.

"I'm completely happy. I'm happy that he used the little advice we gave him in the last few years in a very good way".

Spain appoint Luis Enrique as new coach
Rubiales also appointed former La Roja and Deportivo La Coruna goalkeeper Jose Francisco Molina as Spain's new sporting director. He's had bigger offers but he wanted to be national team coach and I want to highlight the sacrifice he has made.

"I really don't understand these questions, always looking back to where I made some mistakes", he said.

"It was a tough first half".

And he is delighted that this current Croatian generation have finally lived up to, and now surpassed, the standards of the 1998 team which reached the semi-finals.

'In extra-time we showed we are still able with the fatigue to play our game'.

Speaking to beIN Sport following the game, the much maligned Liverpool defender claimed that he is one of the world's best.

"He deserves the Ballon D'Or".
