Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday handed over the mantle of World Cup host to the emir of Qatar, whose country will stage the 2022 edition of the tournament.

The 2022 World Cup is set be the last involving 32 teams, before the competition is expanded to 48 entrants in 2026 - when it will be held in the US, Mexico and Canada.

Al Khater has said such an expanded 48-team event would be "doable" in Qatar with a decision expected in early 2019. Performances like this should be a catalyst for other regions to try harder to do better.
