His words, spelled out in capital letters in a late night Twitter message, came hours after Iranian President Hassan Rouhani told Trump that hostile policies toward Tehran could lead to "the mother of all wars".

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will reach out to a divided Iranian-American community - some of whom are dismayed by Washington's withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal and the reimposition of sanctions as well as a travel ban that prevents many Iranians from entering the United States - in a July 22 speech near Los Angeles.

"The bitter irony of the economic situation in Iran is that the regime uses its time to line its own pockets while its people cry out for jobs, reform and opportunity", Pompeo said.

The comment comes after the Trump administration launched an online campaign to undermine the Iranian regime, in conjunction with a series of sanctions.

One high-ranking Iranian officer claimed Trump's overnight outburst was nothing but "psychological warfare", according to state TV.

"Peace with Iran would be the mother of all peace and war with Iran would be the mother of all wars".

The U.S. has imposed financial sanctions against Larijani, saying he is "responsible for ordering, controlling, or otherwise directing the commission of serious human rights abuses against persons in Iran or Iranian citizens or residents".

In light of these protests and 40 years of regime tyranny, I have a message for the people of Iran: The United States hears you.

Roundly applauded by his audience, Pompeo affirmed support by Washington for protesters in the Islamic republic.

This will ensure that "ordinary Iranians inside Iran and around the globe can know that America stands with them", he said.
