A total of 13 were also wounded when the shooting started at around 10pm local time. It said Hussain suffered "severe mental health challenges, struggling with psychosis and depression his entire life". Hospitals, meanwhile, continue to treat a number of other victims who also suffered gunshot wounds.

The Ontario police Special Investigations Unit released the gunman's name.

The Greektown neighborhood of Toronto, in which the shooting took place, is particularly busy on summer nights because of its many restaurants, cafes and shops, according to CTV News.

Another social media user shared a video of the neighbourhood at the time of the shooting, and gun shots can be heard loudly in the background.

"They said they were walking and a man told them to get the hell out his way and he just shot them, " Wilson said.

He said: "We just ran".

"A lady tried to run and she fell down", Mantzios said.

Fourteen people plus the shooter were struck in what police described as an "exchange of gunfire".

"There was quite a bit of blood coming from both of their legs", she said. Restaurant staff ordered everyone to the back of the room.

Police have revealed next to no information about Hussain or his motives, but said they are investigating the case from all angles.

An army of police, paramedics and other first responders descended on the scene, while people, some in their pajamas, emerged from their homes to see what was happening.

The assailant in the Toronto shooting rampage, which left two dead and injured 13, has been identified as Faisal Hussain, who lived in the city. Terrorism has not been ruled out as a motive.

In a press conference, Tory said he believed the city has a gun problem because "guns are too readily available to too many people".

"You've heard me ask the question of why anybody would need to buy 10 or 20 guns, which they can lawfully do under the present laws", Tory continued.

Still, while Toronto's gun violence is rising, rates remain far below those found in many large American cities.
