The Israeli defense minister has vowed to expand controversial settlement policies in the West Bank, claiming that it is the "best answer to terrorism".

Palestinian political factions in the Gaza Strip, including the Islamist group Hamas, said Thursday they were committed to a ceasefire with Israel, despite a flare-up in violence overnight.

Israeli authorities say a Palestinian infiltrated the Adam settlement and stabbed three people in a house.

The Israeli army said on Friday it had set up security inspections around the village, questioned a number of his family members and suspended their work permits.

Conricus said the attacker, from the Palestinian village of Kobar, had been shot by a civilian who was passing at the time and witnessed the incident.

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said the attack "was a courageous operation that responds to the daily ugly crimes the occupation commits against our people".

The ceasefire, declared on Saturday by Hamas, appeared to be on the verge of crumbling after Palestinian gunmen injured an Israeli soldier on Wednesday, starting a wave of tit-for-tat retaliations.

The Israeli army said it responded to a Hamas sniper who opened fire on soldiers on the Gaza border. Official Palestinian news agency Wafa said three people were arrested.

Lone Palestinian attackers have carried out multiple attacks against Israelis in recent years in the West Bank, Jerusalem and elsewhere. Israel rejects the widely held view that settlement expansion is one of the greatest obstacles to peace with the Palestinians.
