Paul Manafort’s first trial begins this week: Here’s what to expect

"It seems to me we're seeing deeper ties that Manafort has had financially with his business deals in the Ukraine and with Russian Federation", said Shanlon Wu, a former lawyer for Manafort associate Rick Gates, who pleaded guilty in February and is aiding Mueller's probe.

Federal prosecutors say onetime Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort considered himself above the law as he funneled tens of millions of dollars through offshore accounts.

Paul Manafort orchestrated a multimillion-dollar conspiracy to evade US tax and banking laws, leaving behind a trail of lies as he lived a lavish lifestyle, prosecutors said as they laid out their case against the former Trump campaign chairman Tuesday. Three other aides, including Manafort's longtime business partner Gates, have already pleaded guilty and are cooperating with Mueller's probe.

The charges against Manafort largely pre-date his five months of work for the Trump campaign, some of them as campaign chairman.

The trial is expected to drag on for at least three weeks, with jury selection for the case beginning on Tuesday.

Manafort, 69, has pleaded not guilty to 18 counts of bank and tax fraud related to his lobbying activities on behalf of the former Russian-backed government of Ukraine.

As campaign chairman, Manafort was responsible for all aspects of Trump's White House bid, including shoring up delegate support. Some documents are necessary to show Manafort's connections with those consultants, prosecutors say.

This saga, however, should take an interesting turn soon, as Leicester City are not at all interested in selling the Englishman. The player, for his part, seemed open to a move of a club of United's stature when speaking to the Sun recently.

Ellis has scolded members of Mueller's team before, asserting back in May that the team was really interested in targeting President Trump.

Robert Mueller, the special counsel leading the probe into links between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation, claims Mr Manafort made $60 million from Ukrainian political figures.

"Wow, what a tough sentence for Paul Manafort, who has represented Ronald Reagan, Bob Dole and many other top political people and campaigns", Trump tweeted on June 15.

Prosecutors and defense lawyers for Paul Manafort also picked three women and one man who were sworn in as alternate jurors. Trump denies any collusion with Russian Federation, and on Tuesday tried to make the case publicly that collusion would not be a crime anyway. Manafort became wealthy from the "cash spigot" that came from working for his "golden goose in Ukraine", former President Viktor Yanukovych, Asonye said.

About 500 pieces of evidence have been submitted by investigators, including luxury watches and pictures of lavish homes, and up to 35 witnesses could be called.

Today, Trump is invoking one of the nation's most notorious criminals in venting about the treatment of Manafort as he begins trial. Giuliani said he and Jay Sekulow, another Trump lawyer, had told the president: "This would be a very bad thing to do now".

Mr. Asonye attempted to backtrack, telling Judge Ellis that the evidence presented will determine if Mr. Gates' testifies. That trial, set in the District of Columbia, involves allegations that the longtime political consultant acted as an unregistered foreign agent for Ukrainian interests and made false statements to the US government.
