2 equine cases of West Nile Virus confirmed in Montana

In June, all five boroughs were sprayed with pesticides in an attempt to combat the West Nile virus carried by mosquitoes.

The two cases are in Musselshell County and Lake County, according to a press release from the agency. DEP West Nile virus program staff have conducted multiple operations to reduce mosquito habitats from tire piles and other areas. Although almost 80 percent of people infected with WNV will not become ill, and only a little less than 20 percent of those infected will develop West Nile fever, with mild symptoms (fever, headache, body aches, a skin rash on the chest or back and swollen lymph glands), one in 150 people infected will develop severe infection (West Nile encephalitis or meningitis).

-Clean and chlorinate swimming pools, outdoor saunas, and hot tubs; drain water from pool covers. Long trousers and sleeves are also an important way to cut down on possible exposure to mosquitoes. In addition to human cases, one horse, 10 birds and 34 mosquito pools have also tested positive for WNV.

DUSK and DAWN-This is when mosquitoes are most active.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health has issued an advisory through the Health Advisory Network to alert medical professionals about the risk of West Nile virus. According to the CDC, most people infected with EEE do not show illness.

West Nile is a mosquito transmitted disease which primarily infects birds.

One of the best ways to prevent mosquito breeding and the spread of mosquito-borne viruses is to get rid of standing water around the home and in the yard.

Earlier this month, DNREC's Mosquito Control Section found Delaware's first EEE-positive sentinel chicken for 2018 in a station in Sussex County.

MS reported 63 West Nile cases and two deaths in 2017.

The North Dakota Department of Health has seen a rise in reported West Nile virus cases in the past week and is reminding people to continue taking precautions against mosquito bites that can cause WNV infection. It is spread through the bites of infected mosquitos; horses can not transmit the virus directly to people. An effective repellent will contain DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
