Virgil van Dijk's arrival in January pushed Klavan even further down Jurgen Klopp's pecking order and the 32-year-old has chose to move to Cagliari in pursuit of more playing time.

Jurgen Klopp discussed potential outgoings, injuries and goalscoring competition ahead of Liverpool's trip to Crystal Palace on Monday night.

The 27-year-old had a torrid second season, contributing only three goals in a narrow escape from relegation and ultimately losing his place in Belgium's World Cup squad.

"There was never any doubt about Joe and his ability to play centre-back, but he needed time", said Klopp.

Eagles boss Hodgson said: "He's very, very good".

Dejan Lovren put Klavan in touch with Cagliari full-back Darijo Srna, while former Roma players Mohamed Salah and Alisson couldn't speak highly enough of the Italian top flight.

Klopp could stick with the same side that beat West Ham 4-0 last weekend but Fabinho will be hoping to make his full debut while the likes of Jordan Henderson, Xhedran Shaqiri and Adam Lallana are also pushing for recalls. "Now he is fit, which is good". They have a very good understanding - on a personal level as well.

Jurgen Klopp has a number of players on his books who aren't really going to trouble the statisticians throughout the season, and these need to be shifted on as soon as possible.

"Because when you sign a contract of that length and magnitude, that's where you intend to be for the coming years".

Liverpool will once again come up against a familiar foe in the shape of Christian Benteke on Monday, as one of many ex-Reds including Hodgson himself.

Regularly featured at right-back for the majority of the previous campaign, Gomez never really had the opportunity to make a statement in the middle of the back four, and with so many first team members absent, it's unlikely the England worldwide will have a better chance to establish himself as regular starter in Klopp's side.

"We can do that in training, but I said it in a meeting with the boys: if you are good, journalists are overly excited". It's getting better and better, which is important.

"We have to develop".
