British Columbia wildfires: Smoky skies in western Canada

Thick smoke blanketing British Columbia communities far from any flames - including Vancouver where the haze Monday obscured the city's mountain views - could be particularly harmful for children and seniors but anyone with poor health should take precautions, says a senior scientist.

During "very unhealthy" conditions, everyone is encouraged to stay indoors, avoid strenuous activity, close windows and doors, set air conditioners to recirculate, and use a HEPA air filter if possible.

A new mobile app from The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality allows you to have information about your area's air quality conditions at your fingertips.

Changes in wind direction have brought over more smoke to the area from wildfires around northern and central Washington, as well as from British Columbia. If you have to go outside to walk the dog, keep it short to protect both person and pet.

Air quality alerts are in effect for much of Washington state through Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. While ozone - the other "usual suspect" in poor air quality - is an irritant to lungs, fine particulate matter is a health risk because it gets deep into the lungs and blocks air sacs.

It's been a week since Metro Vancouver issued an air quality advisory and, according to CBC meteorologist Johanna Wagstaffe, the smoke will likely remain thick for the next couple of days on the South Coast. Learn more about building your own air purifier by clicking here.

It's time to break out your particulate respirator mask. You want a mask that either has "NIOSH" or "R95", "N95", or "P95", or higher printed on the packaging.

The Federal Aviation Administration said planes bound for the Sea-Tac International Airport, Seattle's main airport, may be delayed because of low visibility.
