Washington is eyeing a veteran running back after injuries already began piling up in the Redskins backfield. "I'm down for working out or whatever I have to do to make the team", Peterson told ESPN's Josina Anderson.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the team will host Adrian Peterson on Monday.

National Football League contracts are not guaranteed until September 1, so there is no risk in signing Peterson to a contract.

The Redskins have a need at running back after losing rookie second-round pick Derrius Guice to a torn ACL in his left knee in the team's preseason opener on August 9. Two backups, Samaje Perine and Byron Marshall, are out with ankle injuries.

Peterson, 33, joins the Redskins in the wake of a string of injuries at running back.

Peterson began last season with New Orleans but the Saints traded him to the Arizona Cardinals on October 10 after Peterson struggled to find carries in a backfield that included Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram.

This is the same Peterson who averaged three yards per carry in New Orleans before joining the Cardinals mid-season and averaging ... Jamaal Charles and Orleans Darkwa also visited the Redskins the past two days after several injuries at the position, with the team opting to sign Peterson and De'Veon Smith.

Kelley has rushed 11 times for 23 yards with a long run of 5 in the preseason so far.

If Williams' scouting report proves to be credible, Kelley could end up losing his stranglehold on the lead-back role as the season plays out.

Peterson stated that he's back to full health after recovering from a neck injury past year.

But in Arizona, Peterson showed signs he could still be explosive.

The Redskins, though, were unhappy with their 28th-ranked rushing attack last season. Peterson tore his ACL in 2011 but miraculously returned nine months later to rush for 2,097 yards and win the NFL MVP award.
