While McCain, prior to his death, requested that George W. Bush and Barack Obama deliver eulogies at his funeral, the senator chose to "disinvite" Trump to his service.

Like many others, Trump took to Twitter to share a brief but honest note about the late Arizona senator and former GOP presidential candidate.

Trump and McCain had a tense relationship, and McCain was one of the administration's most outspoken Republican critics.

Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., who has called McCain a longtime friend in the Capitol, said in a statement Saturday he was reflecting on the last time he and his wife Marcelle saw the senator.

Former Senator Norm Coleman, the head of the Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC), said, "Senator McCain was a patriot and a fighter".

But there was no way Melania was going to convince Donald Trump to do any more than the bare minimum for a man he openly mocked, despite the fact that they were in the same political party.

McCain and Trump had a contentious history.

As tributes poured in from the United States and overseas, Trump said simply that he sent his "deepest sympathies and respect" to the McCain family.

"Our hearts and prayers are with you!"

Ohio State's Urban Meyer tells school president where he can shove suspension!
OSU said investigators interviewed more than 40 witnesses and reviewed thousands of documents during the two-week investigation. In a subsequent review of Meyer's phone, the investigators were unable to recover text messages older than one year.

In a statement posted on her campaign Facebook page after McCain died, Ward expressed her condolences but did not addresses her previous comments. "He denies everything, but Melania isn't stupid, and she has a good grasp on what's reality and what's actual fake news". McCain had been in the public eye since the 1960s, when the Navy aviator was shot down during the Vietnam War and tortured by his communist captors.

Former presidents, including those who blocked McCain's own White House ambitions, offered emotional tributes.

Likewise, reportedly against the advice of his top aides, Trump refused to issue an official statement praising McCain for his years of service in both the military and Senate and calling him a hero.

McCain, who served in Congress for decades after being held as a prisoner of war in Vietnam for five years, is scheduled to lie in the Arizona State Capitol on Wedensday and the U.S. Capitol on Friday, according to the release.

McCain frequently criticized Trump for his behavior and policies, and dramatically cast the deciding vote to not repeal the Affordable Care Act past year, an act that drew a round of angry tweets from Trump. "Godspeed, Senator. You will be sorely missed", he said.

"John McCain's life is proof that some truths are timeless".

On Saturday, the nation learned about the passing of an American hero, Senator John McCain.

Both Vietnamese people and USA citizens in Hanoi have flocked to the grey, concrete monument to offer flowers, incense, flags and other tributes to McCain.

Mr Biden wrote: "As a prisoner of war, John endured the worst of what human beings can do to one another".
