Cuomo and Nixon spar in debate

Cynthia Nixon made a simple request as she prepared for a crucial debate in the race for the governorship of NY: ensure that the temperature in the hall is a balmy 76F (24C).

The pair's first and only debate at Hofstra University on Long Island will be Cuomo's first one-on-one faceoff since 2006, when he met Republican Jeanine Pirro ahead of a state attorney general election. Two topics in particular got the two trading jabs. immigration and public transportation.

Cuomo told Nixon. "Can you stop interrupting?"

Cuomo is the heavy favorite to win a third term in the September 13 primary against political newcomer Nixon, who trails Cuomo in every public poll, according to The Washington Post.

"What I would say is that we're not talking about children smoking marijuana", she said. In their statement, the campaign said that "Cynthia will debate Governor Cuomo backwards and in high heels if she has to".

"The governor of NY is not a job about politics, it's not about activism", he said.

Yet Cuomo skirted questions about his decision to shut down the anti-corruption Moreland Commission n 2014 after just one year ― a panel Nixon vowed in May to restore.

Nixon balked: "I am a person".

"You are a corporation", Cuomo said.

"Yes", Cuomo said. "Yes, yes and yes".

"Yeah, as soon as you do", said the governor.

Nixon also invoked Trump's name as a reason for why she should be New York's governor, saying "when it comes to opposing Donald Trump in NY state, we already have a corrupt corporate Republican in the White House".

Nixon is demanding that the room be a balmy 76 degrees. "Otherwise, I will serve four years as governor of the state of NY".

"Today, you have to fight Donald Trump, who is the main risk to the state of New York", Cuomo said.

Nixon hit him back with the controversy surrounding his former aide Joe Percoco, who was found guilty of three counts of bribery.

Nixon has aligned herself with the more progressive Bernie Sanders wing of the Democratic party, challenging Cuomo from the left with an anti-establishment message.

On the deteriorating state of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Cuomo stuck to his line blaming New York City for failing to pay its fair share to make repairs.

Several times, Cuomo grew frustrated with Nixon interrupting him during his responses, which caused the two candidates to directly engage.
