PARIS Prosecutors in Paris have opened a preliminary investigation of a woman's rape and sexual assault accusations against actor Gerard Depardieu, a French judicial official said today.

The complaint was filed on August 27 and went to the Paris prosecutor on August 29.

The alleged victim made her statement to police in southern France, who then passed it on to prosecutors in the capital.

Depardieu, 69, "absolutely denies" all allegations, his lawyer told the AFP news agency.

Depardieu is one of France's biggest worldwide stars and has taken part in more than 170 films.
