Sen. John McCain Funeral, Eulogized by Barack Obama, George W

WASHINGTON Thousands of people lined up for blocks outside the U.S. Capitol today to say goodbye to John McCain as officials, relatives and friends paid their tributes inside to the Vietnam hero and longtime senator lying in state under the majestic dome. It set a tone echoing her father's own passion.

"These were bitter contests, both of them", Flake said.

Biden, a Democrat who was among the fast friends the Republican senator made across the aisle, said he thought of McCain as a brother, "with a lot of family fights". He will lie in state there for a public visitation period before he is commemorated Saturday during a private ceremony at the National Cathedral.

It is the first of two days of services in Washington honouring the Arizona senator, who served in Congress for 35 years.

On the list provided by funeral organizers are the current president of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, and the former president of Georgia, Mikhail Saakashvili. Former Democratic President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are also at the service.

Kara-Murza has been poisoned twice in recent years, and he's expressed his gratitude to McCain for calling attention to his case.

Those in Arizona can watch NBC's coverage of the service taking place at the Washington National Cathedral on 12 News.

Rich Washburn, 73, a Navy veteran who served in Vietnam, took the train from his hometown north of Philadelphia.

Music played as the crowd filed in.

Former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush will speak during the service, along with Sen.

McCain chose a Russian dissident as a pallbearer, though Trump has professed repeatedly his affinity and admiration for Russian President, Vladimir Putin - praise that came amid special counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

Flood would be "an excellent choice", Trump's outside lawyer Rudy Giuliani told TIME during a telephone interview on Wednesday. Mr McGahn had acted as liaison between the administration and justice officials involved with the Russian Federation inquiry.

McCain, a former Republican nominee for president and six-term Arizona senator, died August 25 from brain cancer.

After McCain's death was announced last weekend, the president issued only a perfunctory tweet of condolence to the late senator's family.

On Sunday, McCain will be buried in Annapolis, near the Naval Academy where he was once a student.

After Friday's ceremony, McCain will lie in state for the rest of the day for public viewing in the rotunda, where his flag-draped coffin will be presided over by a Capitol Hill Guard of Honor. The motorcade was expected to kick off at 8:30 a.m. D.C. time.

On Saturday, his casket traveled to the cathedral after stopping at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, where McCain's wife Cindy laid a wreath.

The former aviator spent more than five years in a Vietnamese prison camp, returning home to launch a political career that saw him win the Republican presidential nomination in 2008.

That said, I am curious about President Donald Trump's exemption from military service because of bone spurs.
