Bridge runs over the Majerhat Railway Station.

The injured people have been rushed to CMRI Hospital and SSKM College and Hospital. An unidentified traffic policeman said vehicles that usually move to and from the city through Majerhat bridge have been diverted through various other roads.

The Kolkata Disaster Management Department, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the state fire department conducted the search operations throughout the night, the officials said. The tragedy happened two years after the collapse of the under-construction Vivekanand flyover in Kolkata, in which over 20 people were killed. Locals said that even though the bridge had been painted blue and white - the colour of the Trinamool Congress government - it was dilapidated and had grass growing on its edges.

The Majerhat bridge was built 40 years ago.

The Majerhat bridge reportedly collapsed around 4:45pm. "But we need to remove the debris to find out what is underneath", another official working at the accident site said. "I pray that those who are injured recover at the earliest", Modi said in a tweet. Some of them said the bridge has collapsed.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is now in Darjeeling, is expected to return the city today and visit the site. "But this is a matter of investigation".

Circular Railway services and local train services in Budge Budge-Sealdah line were affected, an Eastern Railway spokesman said here. The local train services were suspended from 4.45 pm, he said.

"It is really unfortunate that the bridge has collapsed. Hard to gauge enormity of tragedy as yet looking at visuals".

He said, "The Bengal govt and Mamata herself is responsible for this bridge collapse".

The last time a flyover collapsed in the city was on March 31, 2016, when a almost 500 feet section of an under construction structure caved in at the city's trading hub of Burrabazar killing 27 persons and injuring about 80.
