'We have a duty:' Myrtle Beach officers prepare for Hurricane Florence

Anxious about how the government will respond to Hurricane Florence's devastation?

"It is an extremely unsafe, life-threatening, historic hurricane", said Roy Cooper, governor of North Carolina, as he warned people not to gamble their lives on riding out the storm.

As of 11 a.m., the potentially catastrophic Category 4 storm was centered 485 miles (785 kilometers) southeast of Wilmington, moving at 15 mph (24 kph) with winds of 130 mph (215 kph) and enough moisture to dump feet of rain on the region.

Wake County schools are closed Thursday and Friday along with numerous other schools in North Carolina. "Take all necessary actions to protect life and property from rising water and the potential for other risky conditions".

North Carolina residents rushed to stack up on food, water, toilet paper and other necessities as "monster" Hurricane Florence is set to touchdown in the state early this weekend.

Florence is expected to make landfall late Thursday night or early Friday morning, Mountain Time, somewhere between Atlantic Beach, NC and Savannah, GA.

"Protection of life is the absolute highest priority", he added. "Be ready to move to the safest place inside your shelter if necessary".
