Washington, Sep 11 (IANS) More than 1 million people in the southeast United States faced mandatory evacuation orders as hurricane Florence neared Category 5 strength on Tuesday, authorities said.

Florence, packing winds of 140 miles per hour (220 kph), was expected to grow even stronger before making landfall on Thursday, mostly likely in southeastern North Carolina near the SC border, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.

Weather experts, however, continued to warn that the forecast "cone" is a best a guess, and that landfall could occur anywhere from northeastern SC to northeastern North Carolina. "Please be prepared, be careful and be SAFE!"

South Carolina's governor Henry McMaster too.

At least 250,000 more were due to be evacuated from the northern Outer Banks on Tuesday, along with some coastal Virginia residents. The potential threats to the area posed by Florence include damaging winds, which can result in power outages and structural damage, flooding caused by heavy rain, and a significant storm surge impact. Early on Monday Isaac, which the NHC called a small hurricane, was about 1,900km east of the Windward Islands - a region still recovering from 2017's powerful Hurricane Maria - with maximum sustained winds near 120km/h.

Before hurricane season ends on November 30, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) expects a total of nine to 13 named storms. "This helps everyone find vital information more easily".

James City County has declared a state of emergency in anticipation of effects from Hurricane Florence.

If Florence slows to a crawl just off the coast, it could bring torrential rain to the Appalachian mountains and as far away as West Virginia, causing flash floods, mudslides and other unsafe conditions.

"I've been doing this since 1983", Roberts said as he completed an order for another load of supplies.

"Pretend, presume, assume that a major hurricane is going to hit smack dab in the middle of SC and may go way inshore", McMaster warned.

The center also spoke about the storm's power.

NHC forecaster Chuck Caracozza notes it's not unusual to track three or more storms this time of year.

Hurricane Florence is now a Category 4 storm moving toward the west near 13 miles per hour.

The hurricane center's description of a Category 4 hurricane begins with "catastrophic damage will occur".

Hurricane Florence is poised to affect more than 10 million this week in the southeastern U.S.

The National Hurricane Center issued an advisory Monday that the storm is expected to approach the North or SC coast Thursday as an "extremely unsafe major hurricane".

"The Storms in the Atlantic are very risky". "It is still expected to be a large and extremely unsafe hurricane when it makes landfall", expected late Thursday.

"A west- northwestward motion with a decrease in forward speed is expected through late Tuesday, followed by a turn toward the northwest and then toward the north-northwest on Wednesday and Thursday", the NHC said.

Preparations for Florence are intensifying up and down the densely populated coast.
