How Democrats And Republicans Are Reacting To The FBI Report On Kavanaugh

Senate Republicans may well confirm Brett Kavanaugh this weekend.

Earlier that day, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., along with several Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee all responded to the FBI's findings Thursday by saying that the scope of the probe into the sexual misconduct allegations against the nominee was not up to their liking.

While the comments by Mr Flake and Ms Collins were positive, neither explicitly announced support for Mr Kavanaugh. It gathers facts and conducts interviews, both with witnesses willing to be identified by name and those who wish to remain anonymous.

Kavanaugh admitted that he became "too emotional" and said things he shouldn't have.

The judiciary committee voted to advance Kavanaugh's nomination to the full Senate, which is expected to attempt a vote Friday.

The 85-year-old Iowa Republican appeared at the briefing with four other Judiciary Committee Republicans, all of whom defended Kavanaugh and the integrity of the FBI investigation into the sexual misconduct allegations against the judge - a probe that's been widely decried by Democrats as unfairly limited by the White House.

DIANNE FEINSTEIN: The most notable part of this report is what's not in it.

Republicans have a narrow 51-49 Senate majority, and vice president Mike Pence will be available to cast a tie-breaking vote.

The Left has accused Judge Brett Kavanaugh of being a drunken, conservative, Irish Catholic rapist. That's a reason why Manchin, in a battle, has parked himself on the Kavanaugh fence for now. Flake, who's not stated his position on the nomination, was among three Republicans who pressed Trump to order the renewed Federal Bureau of Investigation background check.

Canada's ambassador to Washington says the US and Canada have made a lot of progress in free trade talks but there is no deal. Mexico and Canada will also get protections if the USA goes through with plans to impose tariffs on vehicles and auto parts.

In Illinois and other states, Democratic primary turnout surged.

Fueled by resistance to Trump, polls have found Democrats were far more enthusiastic about voting than Republicans for most of the year. Increased ideological and partisan divisions and pressure from the #MeToo movement could dent the court's image, especially since the coalition backing the new prospective new justice has such narrow support.

Her powerful account, along with Kavanaugh's angry rebuttal, has divided the country, rekindling the national conversation on sexual misconduct and the burden of proof in the #MeToo era.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McMcConnell filed a procedural motion on Wednesday, setting in motion the process of stopping debate and moving toward a final roll call on Kavanaugh that could happen as early as Saturday.

Over in the House, Democrats are positioned to hold the seats they have and flip the 24 GOP-held seats needed to seize control of the House. Senator Gillibrand explained, "First of all he shouldn't be on the Supreme Court because of his record, and what he believes". He accused McConnell of attacking Democrats so he can avoid the "truth".

Fairness? McConnell is a hypocrite.

Judge Merrick Garland, raised in north suburban Lincolnwood, never even got a hearing in McConnell's Senate.

But Republicans moved forward with plans for a key procedural vote on Friday and a final vote on Saturday on confirming the conservative federal appeals judge for a lifetime job on the top U.S. court. Flake said he saw no additional corroborating information against Kavanaugh, although he was "still reading" it. Stevens was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Gerald Ford, a Republican.

Richard Oh, who attended Yale at the same time Ramirez and Kavanaugh were students there, wrote in the declaration that he recalled a female student telling him that "what she initially thought was a plastic penis was exhibited, but she later realized it was a male student's exposed penis".
