Spain's national Met Office, AEMET, has issued a raft of severe orange and yellow weather warnings across the country for heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds and high coastal waters.

AFP reports that the wind blew off the roof of the stadium that hosted the final of European competitions on hockey on roller skates among women.

The BBC, however, noted that the storm had winds of up to 106 miles per hour. "People were very anxious", the BBC reported.

Hurricane Leslie was downgraded to a tropical storm and by Sunday morning most of the powerful winds and heave rains had subsided.

State broadcaster RTP said Leslie's wind speeds reached 170kmh in the coastal town of Figueira da Foz, 200km north of Lisbon.

Manchester United 'want Massimiliano Allegri as next boss'
Manchester United's striking problems have been one of the biggest challenges of manager Jose Mourinho since he joined the club. It's the squad that put me in that position, who gave me the freedom to express myself, and gave me the confidence to".

The exact trajectory of the hurricane, however, remains uncertain due to the presence of another storm approaching the region from the north, Portugal's meteorological institute said. "On the forecast track, the depression is expected to slowly move away from Mexico over the next few days", according to the agency.

Forecasters said a tropical storm warning is in effect for Madeira Island, where Leslie is expected to hit Saturday night.

The NHC is monitoring two low-pressure areas as of October 14.

"The "system has become better defined over the past couple of days". It's moving east-northeast at 29 miles per hour, the NHC said, and is expected to weaken to a tropical storm over the weekend. "Regardless of development, locally heavy rainfall will be possible across portions of Central America Tuesday through Thursday".

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) said Leslie on landfall would loose intensity and pass to the category of "post-tropical storm". However, he is weakened before he reached the Portuguese coast.
