Carole Bober Gentry, a spokeswoman for the participating Maryland Lottery, said so many Mega Millions tickets have been sold that 75 percent of the projected winning number combinations will have been chosen by the time of drawing - making it more likely that someone will walk away with the jackpot.

If a player hits all six numbers to win the jackpot, they can opt for an immediate cash payment of $904 million or receive the $1.6 billion prize over 29 years. The estimated jackpot for that drawing would tie the largest lottery prize in US history. But like Mega Millions, no one took home Powerball and the pot continues to rise.

The numbers were drawn for what was a $470 million dollar Powerball jackpot Saturday.

Tuesday's Mega Millions and Wednesday's Powerball jackpots combined are roughly $2.22 billion.

Tonya Jimenez, assistant manager at Beavers Market in Fort Collins, Colorado, said all three registers were going Saturday, a day after the store sold 220 tickets.

"They don't know what to do".

The Mega Millions jackpot has been growing since July, when a group of 11 California office workers won $US543 million ($763 million).

The game, which was created in 2002, has seen changes over the years that have reduced the chances of winning, meaning bigger and bigger jackpots.

"But then the common sense in me says I should split my money between the two, because why should I pass up a measly half a billion?".

"I'd be more surprised if it doesn't get hit".

Mega Millions is played in 44 states as well as Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
