Six years ago, angry demonstrators filled the streets in dozens of Chinese cities to protest Japan's claim to islands in the East China Sea, surrounding Tokyo's embassy, overturning Japanese cars and in some cases even attacking sushi restaurants.

Saying Japan welcomes and supports China's efforts in furthering opening-up, Abe expressed Japan's willingness to intensify exchanges with China to lay the social foundation to improve bilateral ties.

Abe said he sought frank talks with Xi and Li covering North Korea and trade issues.

Prime Minister Abe also raised the issue of human rights during meetings with Premier Li on Friday, and stressed to Chinese officials that the global community is carefully watching the situation in China.

"We will certainly raise our concerns over terrorism and other worldwide trans-border crimes", Gokhale said.

Hsiesh noted that information now available suggests Japan and China will discuss cooperation in the fields of security and finance, and that Abe is likely to invite Xi Jinping personally to attend the June 2019 G20 summit in Osaka.

The two leaders would jointly hold a reception that would mark the 40th anniversary of the signing of the China-Japan Treaty Of Peace and Friendship. The Hollywood Reporter said China has imported a total of 12 Japanese films during the first three quarter of 2018.

Hu Lingyuan, director of the Center for Japanese Studies at China's Fudan University, said Trump's trade policy had contributed to closer Sino-Japanese ties. Animosity between the two Asian powers is also being reduced by "soft power" factors, like the more than 8 million Chinese tourists who visited Japan this year.

While Japan, anxious about China's growing naval power, is keen for closer economic ties with its biggest trading partner, it must manage that rapprochement without upsetting its key security ally, the United States, with which it has trade problems of its own.
