The Democratic nominee, Beto O'Rourke, raked in $8.5 million - another enormous haul - while Republican incumbent Ted Cruz brought in $5.2 million. "O'Rourke is within striking distance, but time is running out in a race that Democrats have hoped would deliver an upset victory that would be key to a Senate takeover". Ted Cruz as the two candidates embark on their last full week of campaigning.

With a 51-46 race eight days before Election Day, the El Paso congressman has cut Cruz's lead almost in half in the last three weeks. However, recent polls still show him trailing by single digits. Today, O'Rourke leads 56 - 40 percent among independent voters and 96 - 2 percent among Democrats.

The same pollsters found a 9 percentage point lead for Cruz in a poll released October 11, and the same margin three weeks before that, despite the intervention of President Donald Trump, who headlined a rally of 16,000 in Houston for Cruz last Monday night. And just 2 percent of those who could name one of the Senate candidates indicated they might change their mind before the election.

White House, CNN Engage In War Of Words Over Explosives Packages
Sanders was speaking with reporters outside the White House just hours after CNN's NY offices were evacuated Wednesday. And, a similar package arrived at the home of Democratic megadonor George Soros earlier this week.

Per Quinnipiac, Cruz is holding on to his lead due to his gender advantage: he is winning handily with men, while O'Rourke only has a modest edge with women.

Republicans have said they believe O'Rourke's election bid "is a serious threat" to Cruz's re-election.

The poll's release comes as a record number of Texans continue to cast ballots during the state's early voting period.
