Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) has been declared the victor in his fierce campaign against Democratic Rep. Beto O'Rourke, ending the upstart political star's longshot bid to unseat the widely loathed Republican.

The Houston native waited until Election Day to encourage her 119 million Instagram followers to vote, wearing a "Beto for Senate" hat in photos that went up a little after 5 pm local time (11am NZT) - just a few hours before most Texas polls close.

The problem for O'Rourke was that he was running in Texas, a state that hasn't sent a Democrat to the U.S. Senate since 1988 and that Cruz won by 16 points in 2012.

The Texas GOP had also played up O'Rourke's punk rock past - the Democrat had been in the band Foss - and two alcohol-related arrests from his 20s.

CJ McCollum also finished with 30 points, though he also had a hard time hitting from outside, going 2-of-8 from three. The Lakers are playing about as well as expected at this point, considering the cast around James .

Even that was a shock for Cruz, who won 10-plus contests during the 2016 Republican presidential primary and has always been considered the most powerful and popular conservative in a state full of them. The president's campaign hosted an all-day tailgate and a rally for supporters, while Trump gave Cruz a new nickname: "Beautiful Ted". After some playful back-and-forth ribbing, Triumph turned his attention to Beto's opponent.

Colbert noted that Triumph had been unsuccessful in confronting Senator Ted Cruz during the 2016 Republican presidential primary, but Triumph's luck was a bit better this time around.

Said Triumph to Late Show viewers: "Come on, this is the man".

Cruz, who was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2012, has been a prominent, if not contentious, figure in the Republican Party.

"Ted, is it true you will defend the constitution at all costs, except for when Donald Trump calls it ugly on Twitter?".

Finally, Triumph got to harass Cruz up close, and Cruz tried to own the dog. "I support spaying and neutering, just like Trump did to you!" "Just like Trump did to you".
